Rotation 5 Site Evaluation Reflection

Both site evaluations with Dr. Saint Martin were conducted via Zoom.

In the first site evaluation the group of 5 of us doing our Psychiatry rotations all joined one Zoom call and each presented a patient we had seen on rotation and shared our experiences. It was very helpful to get feedback from Dr. Saint Martin on our write-ups and what to include in which sections, as well as commentary on the nuances of each of our cases. It was also interesting to see how the psychiatric emergency experience I was getting differed from the inpatient psychiatry experience one of my classmates described. I presented the first write-up posted in Rotation 5 H&Ps, which was a case about a woman with newly diagnosed Bipolar 1 Disorder who was non-compliant with her medications and thus presented very disorganized and needed psychiatric stabilization.

The second site evaluation only included myself and one of my classmates from my rotation because of scheduling conflicts. In this visit, we submitted 2 write-ups and each chose one to present. I chose to present my third write-up, which was the case of a woman who was seen in the medical emergency room after EMS was activated by her boyfriend for suicidal ideations. She cut herself “to prove a point” and was therefore accepted to CPEP for overnight observation and re-evaluation the next morning. She was ultimately diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and discharged with instructions to follow-up with the adult outpatient psychiatric clinic. Relating to this case, I presented an article that compared 3 different treatments in the management of specific symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. We also submitted 5 pharmacology cards for this evaluation.

Since psychiatry can be so nuanced, it was really helpful to discuss these cases and get feedback on our write-ups with Dr. Saint Martin, who has so many years of experience in this specialty.
